Why is it that - iPod
Why is it that I cannot tell my ipod to play a selection of cd’s (or artists for that matter) without going to my powerbook and create a playlist for them?
Did i miss the part in the EULA where it says ‘WARNING: provides everything but the most basic mechanism to select a couple of tunes from your 15GB collection’ ?

Thunderbird on the mac
Just got this in Thunderbird, i had to restart to make it go away:
Overall i’m not too happy with Thunderbird on Mac, the whole app just feels very Linuxy (is that a word? if not just remember you read it here first!) and there are a few display bugs that make it just slightly annoying to use every now and then. Not that i’m considering switching though, been there done that. It’s just that it interrupts the overall smoothness of my mac experience. For those that don’t use mac, well … i don’t expect you to understand so i won’t bother explaining it … those that do use it - you get my grip !
Same goes for Firefox btw, i’m still using Safari wherever i can. The new 2.0 did not impress me at all, at least on windows it freezes way more than 1.5 ever did.

Jorg
Don’t these people have anything better to do than to make funny videos mocking my name ? ![]()
Update:
I emailed Brett Novak (the author of the original video) just for the fun of it to see what’s up, here’s what he had to say:
—————–
Jorg,
Good question. The name is actually referencing the characters name,
which is Jorg, which has been his name for the past 2 videos hes been
in. The name originally came up completely randomly when we were
filmin the first video. No real fantastic story to it - just figured
no one else really had that name - which apparently wasnt quite the
truth.
We actually had one other guy threaten to sue us and such since his
last name was Jorg. I had to slowly explain to this man that that
wouldnt legally be possible and that the reality is to - get over it.:)
But if it makes you feel any better - It actually was named after you

Not so obvious class names
I came across this today in the Hibernate sources:

An interface that has “Implementor” in its name ? It made my head spin for a while, trying to understand why someone would name it that way. Looking at the class comment didn’t help me much either, in fact quite the contrary
Now I’m all for using declarative naming when programming, as it tells you the intent of a component without having to look at it. Therefor i would have no problems using some of the class names mentioned here .
Then again, whoever came up with kFindFolderRedirectionFlagsUseGivenVRefNumAndDirIDAsRemoteUserFolderBit as part of an enum deserves an honorable mention in this list.

philosophical release notes
Why can’t all release notes have a bit of humor like this one from TextMate :
[REMOVED] TextMate no longer pays tribute to human sacrifices, rape, nor does it show a picture of the God of the deaths in your dock — ticket 945BEB5Dposted on Wednesday, November 08, 2006 0 comments Tags: mac os, textmate
Switching mail clients for the fun of it !
After having switched from Thunderbird to Entourage about 6 months ago, then from Entourage to Apple Mail 2 months after that I can now officially say that there honestly is no better email client out there than Thunderbird ! You guessed it, i switched back to Thunderbird over the weekend and my god it’s good to be back !
Looking back, the one feature i was really (and i mean REALLY) missing from both Entourage and Mail.app was the hierarchical threaded view. Both of them can separate one thread from another allright, but when it comes to keeping the thread hierarchy (i.e. being able to see who replied to what) they just go numb and show you the whole thread in a flat layout. Thunderbird shows you a nicely indented overview of all posts and you can see exactly who replied to what.
One other thing l missed having was decent newsgroup support. I really only care for news.gmane.org as that’s where I manage most of my ASF subscriptions. Initially Entourage didn’t work with this server because of some obscure LISTGROUP command it was using. It was only after the gmane admins kindly implemented my request that it started working. Oh and Mail.app doesn’t have newsgroup support at all !
The upside of all this mailbox converting and moving is that i have removed and cleaned out a lot of old mail in the process, reducing my total folder size from about 1GB to less than 400MB, which in turn saves a bit of time when super-dupering my important files to my Terastation. So all in all it wasn’t a useless exercise after all !posted on Monday, October 09, 2006 0 comments Tags: entourage, mail.app, thunderbird
